How to Care For Children's Bedding Properly

Proper care is crucial so that children can enjoy their bedding for as long as possible. You will find helpful care tips below.

When should I change bed linen?

Textiles are everyday objects - and they are used every day. Up to eight hours of sleep is normal, even more in children. During this time, the body releases moisture, skin flakes loosen. In order to rest hygienically, the duvet covers should be washed every fourteen days. But this depends on your own hygiene needs and sleeping habits.

How to wash and dry bedding:

Cotton and linen tolerate high temperatures - however, make sure to protect the colors when using colorful children's bedding! Here, 40 degrees may be the right choice. When drying, it is important to carefully hang the sheets and covers smooth. Otherwise linen will quickly get unsightly creases. Many of our covers are also suitable for the dryer - please refer to our care instructions on the product pages.

Why you should wash bedding inside out:

Especially at high washing temperatures, textiles lose their color intensity in the long run. So that it stays with your bedding, it is recommended to wash the covers on the left. You should also close existing zippers when washing - this will prevent smaller washing parts from getting caught in the cover or getting caught on the zipper.

Sizes of Bedding For Babies & Children

Basically, there are 3 sizes of bedding: baby bedding 80x80 cm (for cradle, pram), children's bedding 100x135 cm (for a toddler's bed) and children's bedding 140x200 cm (for larger child's bed, a teen's bed, bunk bed and mezzanine bed). However, there are as many bedding sizes as there are children in different age groups and parents with their own ideas and types of beds for children. So how do you choose the best bedding size for your baby? What size of bedding to choose to suit the age of our children? Does the baby need bedding? What are the sizes of children's bedding and which ones are best for which cot? For all these and other questions about children's bedding you will find the answer in our guide.

Size of bedding for newborns and babies

For newborns, the use of bedding and fillings is not recommended as bedding can sometimes be dangerous for newborns and infants, who can become entangled in it or slip under the duvet where they have no access to air. Newborns at first need only clothes, a cuddling pillow or a sleeping bag. They don't need bedding at all. However, if parents really care about bedding, they should choose the smallest sizes, i.e. 60x100 cm, 75x100 cm and 80x100 cm. Ready-made bedding sets in these sizes with filling are not easy to buy, which is due to the fact that few people choose them. Here, however, all smaller and larger "hand made" tailoring workshops come to the rescue. However, it may turn out that the child will outgrow the smallest bedding size before he has time to use it. After a few months, the baby will be very mobile and the smallest size of bedding will be too small and impractical. A few movements of the child's feet will cause it to roll up and not fulfil its function. When choosing the size of the bedding for the cradle, you should follow the one that has been used so far or measure the size of the filling. The most common sizes of bedding in the cradle are 80x60, 80x70 or 80x80 cm with 35x45 cm pillowcases.

Bedding for older babies and toddlers

For older babies and toddlers up to the age of three regular bedding is required. The age of the child and the type (size) of the cot will determine what size of bedding will be the most appropriate. Before we go shopping, we need to check which size of bedding will be suitable for our child's bed. For children's beds with dimensions of 120x60 cm and 120x80 cm, we should choose bedding with dimensions from 75x100 cm (unusual) to medium bedding 90x120 cm, and for the largest beds, bedding with dimensions of 100x135 cm. Bedding for small beds is slightly larger than the mattress, but thanks to this we can cover the child well and be sure that it will not easily come out from under the bedding during sleep. The most common bedding size for larger 70x140 cm or 100x135 cm beds is 90×120 cm or 100×135 cm bedding. The most common sizes of children's bedding are 80x120, 90x120, 90x130 and 100x135 cm with a 40x60 cm pillowcase.

Bedding for children

Depending on the type of bed, you will need different sizes of bedding and fillings to achieve the best sleeping comfort. The size of children's bedding changes with age and depends on the child's body structure and mobility during sleep. The size of children's bedding also depends on whether the bed has railings. Changing bedding for a preschool and school child's bed is also a dilemma related to size. The main reasons for changing to the largest children's bedding 140x200 cm are economic reasons and general availability of bedding. A large number of designs satisfies even the most demanding customers and allows you to match the bedding to the interior of the room. However, it should be taken into account that bedding much larger in relation to the size of the bed will be disturbing, especially for younger and smaller children. Bedding sets in intermediate sizes also mean more space and more order in the bed.

Bedding for 3- and 4-year-olds

When our child is already three or four years old, it's the best time to change the bed to a bigger one. For children at this age, a bed with built-in railings and a mattress with a minimum length of 140 to 160-180 cm and a width of 70 to 90 cm is most often chosen. The most common option is a bed with a mattress measuring 80x160 cm. With this size of bed, for younger, less mobile children with a small build, you should choose bedding for a children's bed with dimensions of 100×160 cm. For older, better built and more mobile children, a slightly larger bedding 120×160 cm will be suitable. Free-standing beds without rails or built-in beds are rare in this age group. If you decide to do so, you can choose a slightly larger set, e.g. children's bedding 140×160 cm. For a three- or four-year-old child in a bed with railings, it is most reasonable to choose bedding sets with a 50×80 cm pillowcase. It fills the entire width of the mattress and prevents the child's head from moving to one side or the other during sleep. For beds with a larger mattress and for free-standing beds without a rail, choose a set with a 50x60 cm pillowcase.

Bedding for 5, 6 and 7-year-olds

The next age group we will focus on are pre-school and early school children. Five- and six-year-olds are much less mobile, which is why beds with safety rails are less often chosen. Especially for older children, such beds are no longer needed. Popular mattress sizes range from 80x160 cm to 100 x 180 cm. The most popular mattress is 90 x 180 cm. The bed, which measures 90 x 180 cm and has railings, for smaller children 140x160 bedding with a 50x60 cm pillowcase is most suitable. For older children of normal height, a 140×180 cm bed with a 50×60 cm pillowcase is optimal. For 80x180 cm beds with railings, you can choose bedding 120x160 cm with a pillowcase 50x80 cm, but only for children of smaller height.

The Essential Parts of a Bed Set

Mattress Protectors and Toppers

Mattress protectors shield your mattress from dirt, sweat, and allergens. They come in a wide range of materials, including cotton, down, wool, polyester, and vinyl. Some also have waterproofing, cooling elements, and hypoallergenic properties. Which type you choose will depend on your sleeping preferences and household needs. If you want to add extra cushion to your mattress, consider choosing a mattress topper instead.

Pillows

A standard bedding setup has a mix of bed pillows and throw pillows. Bed pillows are your main sleeping pillows and play an essential part in how well you sleep at night, so you’ll want to choose pillows that fit your sleeping style and position (i.e., back, side, or stomach).

Sheets

There are three main types of sheets: fitted, flat, and pillowcases.
A fitted sheet hugs your mattress tightly, keeps everything in place, and adds extra protection and softness. While some consider flat sheets an optional layer, they add a layer of warmth and help keep your duvet or coverlet clean. And finally, pillowcases protect your skin and keep your pillow fresh.
The type of material you choose for your sheets will depend on factors like allergies, sleeping temperature, and texture preferences.

Blankets, Duvets & Comforters

Blankets are single-layered and come in various levels of thickness, which can be ideal if you’re looking for a lighter layer. Comforters and duvets, on the other hand, offer more insulation and are great for sleepers who need extra warmth. They have two layers of fabric (like cotton, wool, down, or silk) with a filling between those layers.

But how exactly do comforters and duvets differ from each other? The main characteristic that sets them apart is that a comforter is one part, and a duvet is two: an insert and a cover. Duvet inserts and comforters made of down are known for being extremely soft, breathable, and durable. But if you suffer from allergies or need a more budget-friendly option, a quality down alternative is also a great choice.

Coverlets, Bedspreads, and Quilts

Coverlets, or bedspreads, are an added layer of bedding for decoration and warmth. They’re also a good top cover in warmer climates. Meanwhile, quilts are heavier and ideal for colder nights since they have three layers: a top sheet, inner batting, and a bottom sheet.

How to Choose Children's Bedding?

When choosing kids bedding, it's important to consider the factors that will make you and your little ones happy. Below, we outline key things to consider, which includes your budget, the age of your child, the best and easiest-to-clean materials, hygienic features, and durability to help narrow down your kids' bedding search. Keep reading to get started!

Establish Your Budget
Establishing a budget for your kids' bed linens and bedding is a must before you start searching. The good news is that bedding for kids is relatively affordable, and you're bound to find something in your price range. There's a variety of children's bedding available under the $75 range for those instances when you know you'll be moving your kids up a bed size in a year or two. Cheap bedding for kids also works great during potty training days when you're changing bedding frequently and need extra bedding sets ready to go. Have older kids? Consider upping your budget to $100 or more to invest in quality bedding they can use for years to come.

Take Note of Your Kids' Ages
Your child's age range impacts the type and quantity of bedding you should look for. Infants and babies benefit from a light, breathable fitted sheet made of cotton material, and nothing more – not even a pillow or top sheet. This combo helps to regulate their temperature and protect their sensitive skin. Toddlers? A fitted sheet, pillow, and a light blanket should help them sleep and stay safe as they transition from their crib to a toddler bed or open-crib configuration. Kids above toddler age? You can go all-out with bed linens, pillows, and comforters. This is because older children are less likely to experience safety issues when sleeping, so they can sleep with more bedding than toddlers or babies.

Pick the Right Kids' Bedding Sizes
Kids sheets and bedding sets are available in a wide variety of sizes, but the most common sizes include twin, twin XL, or full/double. Make sure you review the size of the mattress when choosing kids bedding for the most seamless buying decision. Choosing the right size for your kids' bedding also helps ensure that everything fits properly.

For baby cribs, the right fitted sheet size ensures a safe sleeping space. This is because a properly-sized fitted sheet doesn't bunch (if too big) or come off the corners (if too small), which ultimately keeps your baby's sleeping space safe and breathable.

For toddlers and up, the right size bedding can make the transition to a big-kid bed ultra-comfortable and seamless. Proper bedding sizes can also help older kids take on the responsibility of bed-making with ease (no fitted sheet or comforter-tucking fiascos!). This might make them more willing to make their own bed in the long-run.

Choose the Bedding Type That Works for You
Kids' bedding can come as a set, which includes a select amount of matching pieces (comforter and pillow shams or sheets). The best bedding sets do all the work for you, so all you have to do is make the bed. Want to create your own set? Pick and choose single pieces to cater to your needs. Opt for a bedding set for a quick and easy selection that looks great together, or get creative by mixing and matching sheets and comforter patterns/colors.

In addition to bedding sets, kids' bedding options include comforters, duvet covers, coverlets/bedspreads, and quilts. Kids' comforters are more plush and thick, which makes them perfect for colder months or for layering with light sheets. Duvet covers are a smart choice for kids' bedding because they provide the coziness of a comforter with a removable cover for quick and easy washing.

Coverlets/bedspreads are more thin and lightweight compared to comforters and duvets, which makes them perfect as a top bedding layer during warmer months. Quilts typically have three layers of material, which combines to equal the plushness of a comforter and the lightweight feel of a bedspread.

Select the Best Quality Material
Review these bedding materials to determine the best one for your kids:
Cotton: When choosing bedding for kids, you can never go wrong with pure cotton sheets/bedding. Cotton kids bedding is a breathable material that works year-round. It works well with sensitive skin, is typically affordable, easy-to-wash, hypoallergenic – the list goes on! Try cotton percale bedding for the same cotton quality with a closer weave pattern. This creates a smoother feel than normal cotton. Or achieve an even smoother, cooler feel with a cotton/satin weave. If you're looking for the highest quality cotton bedding that your child can use for the long-term, opt for 100% Egyptian cotton bedding.

Consider Hygienic Features
Kids bed sheets can have a range of hygienic features that ensure your kids sleep soundly while keeping allergies at bay. Dust mite-resistant sheets are tightly woven to keep the pesky bugs out and your kids' allergies minimal. Children who have bad seasonal allergies or asthma can benefit the most from dust mite-resistant sheets. Antimicrobial sheets prevent the growth and spread of harmful bacteria and viruses to keep your kids healthy. Breathable sheets help keep children cool, which promotes better sleep. It also prevents the trapping of odors for a fresh, clean sleeping space.

Browse by Care Level
When choosing kids bedding, you want to look for easy-to-clean items. This means anything machine-washable – because we all know you don't have time to hand-wash or dry-clean your kids' bedding! If you like to iron bed sheets for a crisp, fresh appearance, there's an option for that too. Or you can skip the hassle altogether with wrinkle-resistant sheets!
